The Auxiliary is finally opening!
It's official, we're finally opening our doors for good! After months of delays and many bumps in the road, there's light at the end of the tunnel. On Wednesday, September 9th, we'll be unveiling The Auxiliary now that its capital development is complete. The project has been led by Middlesbrough Council and funded by Middlesbrough Development Corporation, DCMS's Cultural Development Fund, and Tees Valley Combined Authority.
What started in 2016 as a self-funded, sound-art residency in Stockton has now grown into one of the leading artist-led organisations in the North East, backed by an unstoppable creative community. A National Portfolio Organisation for Arts Council England since 2023, The Auxiliary is home to 27 artist studios, creative co-working space, a contemporary gallery, a music venue, and community garden. The Auxiliary works with over 100 artists annually through exhibition and event programmes which showcase regional talent alongside internationally recognised artists.
The Auxiliary is a founding member of the Middlesbrough Cultural Partnership, part of the driving force behind Middlesbrough's City of Culture bid. As part of a wider ecology of artist-led organisations in Teesside, The Auxiliary has been pivotal in transforming Middlesbrough's industrial landscape into a site for experimental, artistic, and cultural disruption. With Middlesbrough on the City of Culture longlist and The Auxiliary reopening, the future is bright for Boro, and we're so happy to be a part of it.
Join us on September 9th: our press preview starts at 11am, then we open our doors to the public from 2pm to 4pm, with guided tours led by Directors Edel O'Reilly and Liam Slevin from 2pm to 3pm.
